Let’s be honest, insurance is not sexy.
No one wants to think about paying a monthly premium for something they’re not using. Hundreds of dollars a month into a plan that doesn’t really bring you joy? The fact is, you’ll want it when you need it, and you’ll be glad to have it.
Insurance is a complicated system. Whether it’s car, health, or life insurance, choosing a plan can be challenging, especially when you know you’re basically shelling out money for “just in case.” But it’s worth taking the time to do your research, understand what each component of the plans means, and fully comprehend how much money you’ll be on the hook for if something does happen.
In episode 18 of the Black Girl Fly podcast, Tashaunda and I recount our biggest insurance epiphanies. We talk about when we wished we had different insurance and when we were more than grateful to have it. We also break down some of the main factors to consider when choosing a plan, so if you’re new to the insurance market, be sure to listen in.
If you’re diving into buying an insurance plan, check out these resources:
Health Insurance: HealthCare.gov has a great breakdown of health insurance plans, including terms. If you’re feeling lost sifting through all the jargon, this is a great place to learn.
Car insurance: You’re not going to find a single, clear rate for car insurance unless you contact individual providers. However, understanding what kind of insurance you need and how much can arm you before you start that conversation. Dave Ramsey breaks down car insurance terms to help you learn what kind of plan you need. Feel free to contact several providers and negotiate. They’re expecting it.
Life Insurance: Life insurance policies and calculations are so personalized, that there is no way to get a quote without contacting a provider. While there’s little online to help you measure whole life policies, check out this calculator to help you understand how much you might pay for a term policy.
