Finding Your Style Personality
Introduction
Welcome back to another episode of Black Girl fly. I'm your girl Tanisha Nicole.
And I'm Shana Dixon.
And today we're gonna be talking about finding your style or your style personality.
Yes, yes, yes.
So this is one thing that is really important to me right now. So actually, I'd say probably for the last like, oh, maybe, I don't know, pregnancy kind of ruined my timeline. But I've been really working on trying to figure out kind of how to change my style a bit. If I had to be honest, I have been pretty frumpy, frumpy, is how I would say it for a little bit now. And I decided that I was going to make a change and really figure out what my look is. And so it started off. It's so funny. It's so I think we talked about this a little bit. But I was like, oh, I need to go shopping, I need to go shopping, I need to go shopping.
Clean Out and Organize
And of course, like always Tanisha reminded me, hey, you may want to check out what's in your closet first. And so I've started there, really check out my closet. But now I'm really working on finding my style. So just to start off with me, the first thing that I did was I cleaned out my closet and organized it. And when I say cleaned out, guys, I don't know what it is about my stuff. But I really I don't get rid of things like not until like they like ripped off hole or big stain or close flips. I just didn't get rid of stuff. And I had some stuff in there. And I was like, first of all, I don't remember the last time I wore this. This looks like it's about to fall apart. It's I just started pulling out stuff pulling out stuff pulling up pulling out stuff. But the cool thing about me pulling out stuff is I started to find something I forgot about. Yeah, like maybe I could be flying my closet, or even like just like putting stuff together in the right way that I hadn't organized. So now I have like a section that has bottoms. And then it has tops, and then it has seasonal by color. And it really just gave me a better opportunity to kind of put together some different ideas and also to figure out what I was missing in my closet. So this has been a huge for me, I figured out that I really didn't have to buy much. So since I've done this, I have found a few things that I love. I found that I can't wait. I have found that I could do different things with some of the things that I have. And this is really for me, it's a great start. I know that you have done this a few times, and I've even talked to you. And the point you were on your minimalist journey you told me once you were like, come up with a color. Like what colors are you focused on? So can you talk a little bit about what you were saying there? And what that means in finding your style?
The Basics
Yeah, I mean, I think went out. So when I was a minimalist now I'm an essentialist, folks, but when I was a minimalist, I literally had like, I think the count was like 30 or 2930 items of clothing in my like pants, skirts,
shirts every time inclusive jacket was 30 pieces. Pieces. Yes.
And wow. Yeah.
I'll probably have at least 200 pieces.
Yeah, I mean, I probably have that many now. But every maybe yeah, I probably have that many now. But I don't know. So that was a whole process. But I think getting down to pieces that I loved was the key in the color scheme was hugely important because you needed to be able to mix and match everything. Because you only had a limited number of pieces. And you wanted you didn't want every outfit to look the same. And so you know, I would choose pieces for my style. I like neutrals. And so I'm always in a black, a tan, white, those are staples for me. Then I always like to throw in maybe a green, dark green, and pink or blush. Those are like my, my go to pop colors, but they're still kind of neutral. And they match black, white. And you can always mix and match with those colors.
So in that were there any like arrangements of like, how many bottoms did you have, how many types that you have was there?
So it wasn't like a number. It was just more about like functionality. And so, like I like to always have a dark gene and a light gene because they serve two different purposes. Yeah, right. Like gene is more fun daytime kind of thing. But you can really dress up a dark gene, right. And I always keep a black gene, if I don't like it's either black or dark blue, but I usually black, and what's up for, you can dress it up, or you can dress it down. So you can wear it to work or you can wear it casually. And it's a really good interchangeably.
Although it really does sound like like everyone doesn't have to be a mental moralist. But it sounds like this is a good way to kind of start a closet.
Yeah, and they call it like a capsule, you want to start with a capsule wardrobe. And I think it's a great foundation for anybody to start. And then you start building on and adding things to your personality.
Sweet, sweet. So I want to make sure I get this. So you talk about the bottoms, tops, so the
tops so when I'm actually running through these things right now I'm like actually still have these pieces as it were just hilarious. But I'm like a white button down top, which you can wear many ways actually like to get an oversized one. And so you can tie it up kind of cute, be casual, you can tuck it in, go to work and like you can leave it open and even wear like a sweater on top of it like a sweater vest on top. Wear it as a dress. Like there's so many things you can do with the white t. I was like I would have never
bought one a day in my life just so we're clear.
I like the white button ups and then I love white tops period because they just match everything. But I would say for when going into winter, get a turtleneck. Black White is usually what I would go for. But you can get crazy if you want. And then I personally love those little tops that button in the middle, that button down by your private area
tops that button
like leotard suits, body suits. Like okay, I personally love those because I love the clean look like you don't get rushing. They look very pristine, like going into your pants or your skirt. Yes, just personal preference. But I always have like either a short and a long sleeve version of that. In a color minor white. But yeah, so those are tops. And I try to stay away from prints when I'm doing a capsule wardrobe. You don't want anything that stands out too much. So yes. Okay, but you can wear a white top with anything. Right? And like people are not gonna remember. Oh, that was that same white top that she had with other. It was tied up right here. Yeah, actually, yeah. And then I think you need some like jackets. So I think having a nice full light outdoor jacket, like the one I'm wearing. On her jacket is beautiful is a beautiful piece that, you know, accentuates many outfits, but it's a tan suede moto jacket. And it's beautiful. But you also probably need like a blazer, I typically go with a black blazer. And I wear that for work. The one that I have is actually really warm. So I can also wear it as an outdoor jacket if it's like fall or something. So yeah, I could ramble all day about capsule wardrobe. But those are like some of the staple pieces that
How Do you Find your Style?
I have. And so when you really are trying to enhance you so so finding your style, what do you do with that? So now you have the basics you have that what do you do to make it you to make sure that you kind of you feel it yourself?
Yeah. So I think beyond is having the basics, like you literally shop to fall in love. Yeah, but show me that. Yeah, don't buy anything that you're on the fence about.
So that's what I did with my closet. So there were some things that I actually really liked, or that I wouldn't say really like that I liked there. And I was like, he doesn't do it though. I got excited to put it on. Exactly. And I was like okay, trash. Yeah, I have to admit this. I am going to work on losing some weight to this a couple things. I was like I love but I can't get into it, right. The best way to make this work really,
really appropriate. I mean, for real, like that's totally appropriate. It doesn't always work out for me that way. But I do have some pieces in my closet like when I don't look so good in this. Yeah. But until then they're just sitting. But but if you if you love every piece in your closet, you're always going to put together a stellar outfit like it is full proof. And so I even got rid of all my like lounge ugly stuff that you know, you might put on quickly to go to the store because you don't want to be walking around and you don't want me to believe
Can Cute Clothes be Comfortable?
in you. Okay, on that note, though, I feel like the reason that I kind of moved into like this frumpy state was because I felt like, like cute clothes weren't comfortable. Like how do you like I was like do I got a tattoo, I got three kids. But I was like, I just need to be able to put something on and go, like, is there a way that you can still be stylish and still be comfortable. But still,
what I have on right now is one of my signature casual outfits, but it looks cute does look cute. But this is a one piece romper don't have to wear a bra with it is optional.
And I throw on a jacket like this is it's literally one two steps like
so. Okay, so maybe my mind that was wrong. So it was more like I was buying it for the distinct purpose of being comfortable. Instead of saying, hey, what can I do to jazz up and still be comfortable? And or, or taking back what you just said? Do I truly love this? There's no way I could have truly love those comfy clothes.
No, you don't love the way they make you feel. I guarantee you that you don't love the way that people look at you when you're wearing those clothes. But when you looking good, you know you looking good?
Yeah, so there's so many things that you can do about your closet. But one thing I will also know because we've talked about this is that when you buying things you love, like, I encourage people to go to different stores that you would not she
Shop Around
said this to me is because all my clothes look like. But what I would do this so bad. So I dreaded buying clothes for myself, and partly because of from keeping a completely one on it is because I was getting large. And I was like, Oh, I hate the way I'm gonna have to look at my body. When I put on these clothes. I don't like the way the clothes fit me because I gained weight. And so I would literally just go shopping once every like six months and just, you know,
buy everything at once.
And you know, these stores have seasons they have looks they have and everything would look exactly the same.
Yes, absolutely. So don't do that. Do women do not know like the, the thing that I love about my closet is that no one could ever replicate my closet. Because I've gotten stuff traveling right, a piece that you will never find one of a kind you never gonna see this again. But I also have I have a bunch of stuff from Amazon. I love Amazon. It's like a filler wardrobe thing. But I also I just have pieces from every store, I have h&m all the way up to Saks like, you know, like, it's just everything together. And I mean, you can mix and match when you're talking about different quality points, you can make something lower in with on the higher end, and it automatically makes it look higher.
Yeah, I was gonna say that. So one of the things that I had to do is I had to acknowledge one that I'm not the most fashion savvy, and also that I have tendencies that are rooted in other things like CI quality and things like that. So what I actually did that I really am excited about, this was probably four or five months ago or something. I'm on my like, third order now. But I did a shop for me where someone just send you like you, you first go in and you pick kind of hey, what's your style? What kind of things do you like, what don't you like that kind of thing. And they kind of create a profile for you. And then they see new items that they pick for you. And it seems like they start off with like Staples, buy good things. And so she talked about the jackets, oh, my first batch, I got a jacket, I got a jean like a white jeans. And then in my second batch, I got like a purse, and I got a blazer. And it's really like it's heightened. So the things they send me are typically of higher quality than I would actually purchase for myself. Yeah. And it's also it's those staples. And so I do feel like a lot of the things that I have it, I'll wear with it and definitely didn't bring it up. So that's one thing has been helpful. And I actually no plug that I paid us here, but I use Amazon shopper and they only charge like $5 for somebody to pick this for you and then they charge you of course the price of the clothes and anything you don't like you can return which I actually did. So I'm in my last purchase they sent me pants and they just didn't fit me well like it looked like frumpy my pants. And I was like no, I don't want this so I put it back in and they refunded me the money, but it's giving me things I wouldn't necessarily pick on my own to try out is give me staple items with before it's also hightly my quality of this things out purchase on my own. They've been some really quality pieces that they've been sending me and
let me tell you when you get quality pieces if you spend a little bit more on it, they're probably gonna last you a lot longer I cannot. But
I'm saying though I didn't think about too. You talked about the pieces that you have though. But these were stable pieces that I wear with different kinds of things that give me different kinds of look like I warned the the jacket more casual. I've worn the blazer as a jacket or a blazer with the jeans. I've dressed them up just down.
You can do Yeah, the possibilities are endless. And you know, I can ramble on about fashion. But the last tip that I'm going to give is like, I mean, I think that's great, get a shopper. There's so many shopper programs, and I think the Amazon one, Shonda loves it. So I would highly recommend that. I've tried a lot of the other ones Stitch Fix and all that the one that I did love was the Nordstrom one and they basically give you clothes from Nordstrom, and they just have a good variety. So they do they do, I will recommend that one as another alternative. And what I will say then, in terms of getting ideas to like, you know, flex your own style muscles, like those are really good places to start.
LTK app.- Follow your Style Personality
Like I mentioned, this app, like to know it and basically I follow all of the Instagramers that I like style wise and I have my body type. And I follow them and I can basically see what they're wearing. Like it gives me no link like to know it, I think is what it's called. Okay, the app is like LTK is what the logo looks like. But it is an amazing app. And like you just find people with your body style with your, you know, aspirational fashion personality. And you can just buy what they're wearing and duplicate the look
on it like to go in.
Like there's no sense in trying to recreate the wheel here, like in follow many people. So you're not like getting all one person's outfit. But you could do that if you want. But yeah, there's so many tips and tricks around this. But I think all in all, like when you find your style, you just feel so much better about yourself. And it doesn't matter what size you are like you can adjust as your size changes. But I think and feeling good about yourself and what you're wearing just shows up in so many different places in your life.
That's good. I love it. Thank you.
So until next time, folks, I'm your girl Tanisha calm and I'm Shanna Dixon,
